In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has revealed that manager Erik ten Hag has stripped him of the captaincy. Maguire, who was appointed skipper by former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020, expressed his disappointment but pledged to continue giving his all for the team. The 30-year-old had a mixed season last year, making only eight starts in the Premier League and facing speculation about a potential move to West Ham. Manchester United confirmed that Ten Hag would announce a new captain in due course, with the decision expected during their pre-season tour in New York. The club expressed gratitude for Maguire’s contribution as captain over the past three and a half years. During the 2022-23 season, Maguire played in 31 matches out of the club’s 62 in all competitions, with midfielder Bruno Fernandes taking on the armband in his absence. Maguire’s contract with the club runs until 2025. The defender took to social media to express his gratitude to the Manchester United fans and his commitment to the team despite the captaincy change. Meanwhile, rumors suggest that West Ham, under the management of former United boss David Moyes, may be interested in acquiring Maguire to strengthen their defensive options following the departure of captain Declan Rice to Arsenal.

In a recent development, Harry Maguire took to Twitter to reveal the outcome of his discussions with manager Erik ten Hag. According to Maguire, Ten Hag informed him that he would be changing the captaincy. While personally extremely disappointed, Maguire pledged to continue giving his all for the team and expressed his gratitude to the Manchester United fans for their unwavering support during his time as captain.

Maguire was appointed as captain by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020, shortly after his record-breaking £80 million transfer from Leicester City. However, he has faced difficulties in winning over the United fans and was swiftly demoted by Ten Hag, who dropped him after just two league matches last season. Despite his efforts, Maguire only managed eight league starts throughout the previous campaign.

Reflecting on his captaincy, Maguire stated that leading Manchester United had been a tremendous privilege and one of the proudest moments of his career. He acknowledged the honor associated with being the captain of a prestigious club like United and expressed his gratitude to Solskjaer for entrusting him with the responsibility. Maguire wished the new captain every success and assured them of his full support.

While Maguire is reportedly content at Old Trafford and believed he could regain his place in the team, Ten Hag’s decision might impact his stance. His lack of playing time has raised concerns, as noted by England manager Gareth Southgate, and there’s a genuine risk to his position in the national team if he doesn’t secure regular football.

West Ham manager David Moyes has shown interest in signing a right-footed center-back to bolster his squad after winning the Europa Conference League. Maguire has emerged as a primary target for Moyes, although the specifics of a potential deal are currently unclear. United is said to be seeking up to £50 million for Maguire, whose substantial weekly wages of £190,000 could pose a challenge for West Ham and other potential suitors.

Manchester United has already made significant moves in the transfer market, securing the signing of England midfielder Mason Mount from Chelsea for £55 million. Additionally, Ten Hag aims to bring in Andre Onana as his second summer signing, identifying the former Ajax goalkeeper as an ideal long-term replacement for the departed David De Gea. The club has been finalizing payment structures with Inter Milan over the weekend for the signing of Onana, with the final fee expected to be around £47 million, including add-ons, pending personal terms with the player.

Manchester United’s squad is scheduled to travel to the United States after their friendly match against Lyon at Murrayfield in Edinburgh. Ten Hag hopes to have Onana on the flight, provided that the medical is completed on time and no issues arise.
