Two weeks prior to the commencement of the 2023 NFL season, an agreement has been reached between the New York Giants and the Arizona Cardinals. Subject to a physical assessment, the Giants are set to secure the services of the versatile safety, Isaiah Simmons. In return, the Cardinals will receive a 2024 seventh-round draft pick.

Discussing the trade, Coach Brian Daboll commented ahead of Thursday’s practice session, stating, ‘It’s evidently in the early stages. Joe [Schoen], our General Manager, and his team have diligently assessed various players, including Simmons. Standing at nearly 6-4, weighing around 240 pounds, possessing explosive attributes, and being a high draft selection, he holds promise. I recently spoke with him and extended greetings, introducing ourselves. Our focus now shifts to integrating him into our system and acquainting him with our methodologies.

Selected as the ninth overall pick during the 2020 NFL Draft, Simmons has maintained a perfect attendance record, participating in 50 regular-season games and starting 37 times. Over three NFL seasons, he has accumulated 181 tackles, 7.5 sacks, and four interceptions (including one returned for a touchdown). Additionally, he boasts 16 passes defensed, 11 quarterback hits, 13 tackles for loss, seven forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. The past season witnessed Simmons achieving personal bests across various categories, including sacks (4.0), interceptions (two), tackles for loss (five), and passes defensed (equalling seven).

Nevertheless, his true asset lies in his versatility.

Coach Daboll emphasized this aspect as a driving factor behind the trade, explaining, ‘Our decision to pursue this trade was significantly influenced by his versatility. We envision assigning him a diverse array of tasks to gauge his adaptability. Given his remarkable athleticism, explosive capabilities, and impressive stature, he’s demonstrated competence in multiple roles. While a more comprehensive assessment will be feasible once he joins us, we’re genuinely thrilled to welcome him.’

Defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who recently highlighted his aversion to confining players with labels, echoed this sentiment. He shared, ‘Our defensive strategy prioritizes pressuring the quarterback through assorted techniques. I’ve consistently advocated for a defense that transcends conventional positional designations. I refrain from limiting our players by categories. What matters is optimizing their strengths, engineering scenarios for unhindered passages to the quarterback. Our defense operates as a collection of selfless individuals working in concert.’

Anticipating Simmons’ arrival at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Friday, Coach Daboll disclosed that the timing aligns with the preseason finale against the New York Jets. With a mere two weeks until the season opener against the Dallas Cowboys on September 10, the team is geared up for the challenges ahead.

Simmons will encounter several familiar faces during his adjustment period within the venue. He has engaged in training sessions in Arizona alongside running back Saquon Barkley and wide receiver Isaiah Hodgins. Notably, Simmons and Pro Bowl defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence secured a national championship together while at Clemson, forging illustrious college careers in tandem.

Remarkably, Simmons etched his name in program history by becoming the inaugural recipient of the Butkus Award, an annual accolade bestowed upon the nation’s premier linebacker. In 2019, he earned the distinction of being named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year, solidifying his reputation as one of the foremost defensive talents. This accomplishment was further amplified by his recognition as the sixth unanimous All-American in the institution’s annals up to that point. This exclusive club included former Giant Terry Kinard (1982), Gaines Adams (2006), C.J. Spiller (2009), Da’Quan Bowers (2010), and Christian Wilkins (2018).

Simmons’ trajectory saw him transition from the safety position in 2017 to the role of the starting nickel/sam linebacker in 2018. He concluded his tenure at Clemson boasting an impressive statistical dossier: 253 tackles, 28.5 tackles for loss, 10.5 sacks, 22 pass breakups, four interceptions (inclusive of a pick-six), five forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. All of this was achieved over a span of 1,856 career snaps across 44 games, with 29 of those games seeing him in the starting lineup.

Daboll expressed his confidence in Simmons’ selection placement, asserting, “That’s why he was picked where he was picked.” Moving forward, the focus will be on integrating Simmons into the team, acquainting him with the organizational systems, and eagerly anticipating his progress.
