“Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers numerous refinements, though it bears a striking resemblance to its predecessor.”

“Samsung’s much-anticipated Galaxy Unpacked event lived up to the rumors and leaks, revealing the Galaxy Z Fold 5 with incremental improvements rather than a major overhaul from its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 stole the spotlight, boasting more significant upgrades and a more accessible form factor.

The focal points of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are the upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC and a redesigned hinge, aimed at reducing the noticeable crease that was present on previous Fold and Flip models. During my one-hour hands-on experience with Samsung’s latest productivity powerhouse, I observed the following first impressions.

The refinements on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 are apparent, starting with a reduction in weight from 263g to 253g. Additionally, the device is now 2.4mm slimmer when folded, made possible by the innovative hinge design. Samsung claims that this new hinge not only minimizes the visibility of the inner display’s fold but also enhances shock resistance when accidentally dropped. Moreover, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 maintains the IPX8 water resistance rating from the previous model.

When folded, the Galaxy Z Fold 5’s two halves now align almost perfectly, leaving only a minor gap, which is significantly less noticeable compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Consequently, the overall thickness when folded has been reduced, giving this phone a slimmer and less bulky feel, a marked improvement over its predecessor.”

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 introduces several key refinements, addressing some of the previous model’s limitations and delivering a more polished folding experience.

In terms of design closely resembles the previous model, with similar bezels surrounding the 6.2-inch HD+ Dynamic AMOLED cover display and the 7.6-inch QXGA Dynamic AMOLED flexible panel on the inside. While both displays appear identical to the previous version, the main display boasts a higher peak brightness of up to 1,750 nits, representing a 30 percent increase over the previous generation. This enhancement should significantly improve outdoor visibility on this phone compared to its predecessor.

Under the hood, New phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, which is a slightly customized version of the standard processor. This new chipset brings notable improvements to the phone’s overall performance, image quality, and battery life, much like what was witnessed in the Galaxy S23 series.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers three storage options, all equipped with 12GB of RAM. Users can choose from a base model with 256GB of storage, a variant with 512GB of storage, or a top-end model with a whopping 1TB of storage. Samsung has also incorporated a larger vapor cooling chamber to ensure sustained performance during resource-intensive 3D gaming sessions.

Running on Samsung’s One UI 5.1.1 with Android 13, introduces several added features and improvements. Users can now open apps in floating windows, enhancing multitasking capabilities. Copying and pasting data between apps is more convenient, as it can be done using two fingers – one holding the item (in the Gallery app) and the other accessing the second app. Additionally, the device’s taskbar, located at the bottom of the main display, now allows access to up to four recent apps, further streamlining user navigation and interaction.

Similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, the camera setup on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 remains unchanged from its predecessor. It features a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto camera with 3X optical zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera. For selfies, there are two cameras – a 10-megapixel camera on the cover display and a 4-megapixel camera under the folding display.

Powering the device is a 4,400mAh battery, which is the same capacity as before. Charging options include a cable at 25W or wirelessly at 15W.

Samsung has introduced the S Pen Fold Edition for this phone, boasting a slimmer design that is 40 percent thinner than the one used for the Galaxy S23 Ultra. However, it’s worth noting that the phone does not have a dedicated slot for the S Pen, meaning users will have to carry it separately or use an optional folio case.

the upgrades on this new phone are primarily refinements rather than major changes. Whether these refinements significantly add to the phone’s overall value and justify an upgrade from the already excellent Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be determined once we review the device thoroughly.
