Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie made an unexpected announcement on Wednesday, revealing that they are separating, bringing an end to their high-profile 18-year marriage.

Over the years, the couple openly discussed the challenges they faced in their relationship, and recently, they were seen less frequently together in public. Justin Trudeau, 51, and Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, 48, tied the knot in May 2005 and have three children aged 15, 14, and nine. On their anniversary in 2020, Justin described Sophie as “my rock, my partner, and my best friend.” The separation draws painful historical parallels for Justin, as his father, former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, also went through a separation from his wife, Margaret, in 1977 while in office.

This personal crisis marks one of the most significant challenges for Justin Trudeau since assuming the role of prime minister in 2015, particularly given his emphasis on the importance of family life.

The announcement came a week after Trudeau’s major cabinet shuffle aimed at boosting the fortunes of his Liberal Party, which was trailing in the polls. Despite this, Trudeau remains determined to lead the Liberals into the next election, scheduled for October 2025.

Taking to Instagram, Trudeau stated, “Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate.” Sophie Gregoire Trudeau shared a nearly identical message on her own Instagram account.

According to reports, Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, a close ally of Trudeau, will brief members of the cabinet about the situation. Trudeau himself is expected to speak publicly about the separation in the coming week.

Trudeau’s office clarified that the couple has signed a legal agreement, with the focus on raising their children together. The family plans to go on vacation together next week. Sophie Gregoire Trudeau will be moving into separate accommodation in Ottawa but intends to spend significant time with the children at Rideau Cottage, the prime minister’s official residence, to ensure they have as normal an upbringing as possible.

Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, an advocate for gender equality who studied commerce at university, was working as a reporter when she met Trudeau in 2003, and they got married two years later.

When Trudeau became prime minister at the age of 43 in late 2015, the stylish couple quickly became the center of attention for the global media. In 2015, the New York Post dubbed her “the hottest first lady in the world,” and Vogue magazine published a glowing profile of the couple in its January 2016 issue, complete with embracing photos. The article praised Trudeau’s public displays of affection toward his wife, which some found surprising.

In the initial years following Trudeau’s assumption of office, he and Sophie frequently appeared together at social events and during foreign trips. Notably, during a visit to India in February 2018, they attracted attention for donning colorful costumes on several occasions, which led to derisive comments from back home.

Even before becoming prime minister, Trudeau openly acknowledged the challenges they faced in their marriage. In his autobiography, Common Ground, published in 2014, he candidly wrote about the imperfections and difficult ups and downs in their relationship.

In recent times, there has been a noticeable reduction in joint appearances of Gregoire Trudeau with her husband, indicating signs of stress in their relationship.

On their wedding anniversary last year, she shared a message on social media, acknowledging the journey they had undertaken together, saying, “we have navigated through sunny days, heavy storms, and everything in between and it ain’t over.” She added that long-term relationships come with their share of challenges.

Despite any difficulties, the couple did travel together to London for the coronation of King Charles in May and were also seen together during the visit of U.S. President Joe Biden in late March.

As recently as Monday, Trudeau was still wearing his wedding ring, indicating that the separation decision was made afterward.
