After a prolonged period of anticipation, another star has joined the ranks of the Gotham football scene.

Running back Dalvin Cook has reached an agreement with the New York Jets on a one-year contract that could reach a value of $8.6 million, as reported by NFL Network Insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero on Monday. This signing further bolsters the ambitious goals that the New York Jets have set for the 2023 season.

Dalvin Cook, a distinguished four-time Pro Bowl running back, found himself released by the Minnesota Vikings in June. His journey towards the Jets began with a visit on July 28, following his statement earlier that day on Good Morning Football, where he expressed strong likelihood of signing with the Jets.

Similar to the patiently awaited trade for quarterback Aaron Rodgers, the Jets’ most recent high-profile acquisition took its time to materialize. However, Cook has now officially become a part of the vibrant football scene in the bustling city of New York.

While the Jets have notably welcomed several of Rodgers’ former teammates from the Green Bay Packers (such as Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Billy Turner), Cook doesn’t fall within this category. Nevertheless, his new teammates in the backfield share a level of familiarity, having spent time together in the NFC North during Cook’s previous six seasons.

Despite spending over two months as a free agent, Cook, now 28, remains a formidable asset for the Jets as one of the premier running backs in the league. He arrives in Gotham City boasting an impressive track record of four consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Notably, New York has not seen a rusher hit the 1,000-yard mark since Chris Ivory achieved the feat in 2015.

Last season, the Jets believed they had secured a definite 1,000-yard runner in the form of rookie sensation Breece Hall. Unfortunately, Hall’s potential-filled debut was cut short due to an ACL tear.

The previously uncertain state of the Jets’ backfield could potentially transform into one of the league’s most potent tandems, provided that Cook and Hall can join forces at full strength and health.

At the very least, Cook’s addition should provide a cushion for Hall’s cautious return to the field. Beyond the pairing of Cook and Hall, the Jets also feature third-year running back Michael Carter and second-year rusher Bam Knight, both of whom have showcased considerable promise in the past.

Naturally, Cook will need to familiarize himself with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett’s playbook and shake off any accumulated rust. According to his remarks on GMFB, he has been diligently training in Florida since parting ways with the Vikings.

One notable concern is Cook’s history of injury setbacks, as he only participated in 15 games during his first two seasons. However, it’s worth highlighting that he managed to compete in all 18 of Minnesota’s games in 2023, including playoff matchups—an accomplishment marking his first full season. Despite a career-low yards per attempt (4.4), Cook continued to demonstrate his versatility as a multi-tool back, capable of hitting impressive plays, grinding out tough yardage, and contributing as a valuable receiver out of the backfield.

With Cook’s arrival, the pre-existing buzz around the potential of the Jets’ offense has escalated, ushering in a new wave of hope and excitement.
