Klopp cautions on Saudi Pro League threat as UEFA President downplays impact.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has rebuffed UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin’s assertion that the Saudi Pro League doesn’t pose a challenge to European football. Klopp expressed his skepticism, emphasizing that the forthcoming two weeks would reveal the true extent of the threat posed by Saudi football teams to clubs like Liverpool. His comments followed reports linking Liverpool’s winger, Mohamed Salah, with a potential summer transfer to Saudi side Al Ittihad.

“I can’t say with absolute certainty, but I don’t believe the comparison to Haaland and Mbappe is entirely appropriate. They are young and already earning substantial amounts, which is a different scenario. The stability of it remains uncertain, and the next two weeks will shed light on the challenges it presents. Whatever transpires there [after the Premier League deadline], there will be no room for response. This is something that UEFA or relevant authorities should monitor closely because we all need to safeguard the integrity of the game,” Klopp remarked, as quoted by ESPN.

Ceferin had earlier remarked that players like Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland “don’t aspire to play in Saudi Arabia.”

During the current summer transfer window, prominent players such as Karim Benzema and Neymar have joined Saudi Pro League teams. Liverpool’s midfield duo, Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, have also made moves to the Saudi Pro League, signing with Al Ittihad and Al Ettifaq, respectively. Despite the Saudi league’s activity in the transfer market, Klopp remains unconvinced. He admitted that he has yet to watch any matches from the league.

I have deep respect for all my players currently in Saudi Arabia, although I haven’t had the opportunity to watch their games yet. My schedule hasn’t allowed it, but that doesn’t mean I won’t in the future,” Klopp remarked.

Following the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho to Saudi Arabia this summer, Liverpool may face the prospect of losing Mohamed Salah as well. Reports suggest that Saudi Pro League club Al Ittihad has tabled an offer of approximately €150 million (£128m/$163m) to entice the Egyptian away from Liverpool. The Reds, however, have shown no interest in releasing their star winger on the final day of the summer transfer window. According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool declined a verbal offer for Salah, who signed a three-year contract with the club last summer. The report indicates that Al Ittihad made contact with Liverpool director Mike Gordon on Thursday evening.
