Following reports just two days ago that trade discussions involving James Harden and the Philadelphia 76ers had come to a halt, the esteemed 10-time All-Star guard expressed his strong criticism towards 76ers President, Daryl Morey.

Speaking at an Adidas media event in China, Harden did not mince his words: ‘Daryl Morey is untruthful, and I have no intentions of affiliating myself with any organization he is a part of. Let me reiterate: Daryl Morey is untruthful, and I have no intentions of affiliating myself with any organization he is a part of.’

Over the weekend, credible sources, including ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, confirmed that the 76ers had devised plans to have Harden rejoin their training camp and commence the upcoming season. This development, however, sets the stage for an uneasy scenario involving the discontented star.

Throughout the offseason, the Sixers engaged in sporadic discussions with the LA Clippers, which was Harden’s desired destination. Regrettably, no progress was made on a potential transaction, as per insider sources. While the Sixers were open to facilitating a trade following Harden’s request, subsequent to his decision to exercise his $35.6 million player option in June, their demands were lofty. Despite this, no franchises, including the Clippers, displayed willingness or capability to fulfill these demands, sources revealed.

Harden’s discontentment with Morey stems from the absence of a substantial long-term contract proposal, according to insider sources. The team now faces the risk that Harden’s presence at the training camp could potentially bring anything but a mindset focused on winning a championship. Worth noting, Morey had held the position of Houston’s General Manager throughout Harden’s tenure of over eight seasons with the Rockets.

Confident in the prospect of becoming championship contenders with Harden back in the lineup alongside MVP center Joel Embiid, Philadelphia is committed to finding a solution that accommodates Harden’s return this season, sources have disclosed.

Harden, who earned the title of NBA MVP in 2018, is currently attempting to engineer his departure from his third team in as many years. His journey as a star player began to flourish during his time with the Rockets, under Morey’s leadership, until he sought a trade to Brooklyn. Eventually, the Rockets agreed and facilitated his move to the Nets. However, following an unsuccessful pursuit of an NBA championship alongside Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, Harden expressed his desire to be traded to the 76ers. His strong professional and personal ties with Morey played a significant role in this choice.

Despite leading the league in assists during the current season, Harden, renowned as one of the premier isolation scorers in the league, found himself in a supporting role to Embiid. The prospect of being the second option behind Embiid, while pursuing a championship in Philadelphia, no longer seems to be a prominent consideration.

The 76ers experienced a disappointing elimination in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Presently, under the guidance of new coach Nick Nurse, they appear to be in a state of transition in the Eastern Conference.

Harden showcased exceptional performances with 45 points in Game 1 and 42 points in Game 4 victories over the Celtics. However, he struggled with a 0-for-6 record on 3-pointers in losses during Games 2 and 6. His performance in Game 7 was lackluster, managing only nine points and remaining scoreless in the second half.

The 76ers are no strangers to navigating such situations, having dealt with former No. 1 pick Ben Simmons’ trade request following strained relations with former coach Doc Rivers and other members of the organization. Simmons’ trade demand disrupted the 2021 training camp, leading to his absence from the Sixers’ roster that season. Subsequently, he was traded – ultimately for Harden.
