Manchester City claimed the top spot in the Premier League standings following a 2-1 triumph against Sheffield United on Sunday. Rodri emerged as the hero, securing their third victory of the season with an 88th-minute goal.

As the match remained deadlocked at 1-1 and time ticking away, the ball found its way to Phil Foden inside the United box. While the English midfielder couldn’t control it, Rodri took charge and hammered a powerful half-volley into the top corner. Pep Guardiola, the City manager, was absent from the Bramall Lane touchline due to back surgery.

However, with assistant manager Juanma Lillo stepping in for Guardiola, the team completed the mission even as seven minutes were added for stoppage time, during which the home side sought an equalizer.

Defending champions City stand alone as the sole team with a flawless start to the season, amassing nine points. This places them two points ahead of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Arsenal.

“Speaking about today’s performance, Lillo expressed, ‘In general, I believe we showcased a commendable display. The final score didn’t quite mirror our intentions.’

City’s forward, Erling Haaland, faltered in the first half as his penalty, awarded for a handball, struck the post. Yet, the Norwegian redeemed himself shortly after the hour mark, securing the lead with a header from Jack Grealish’s well-placed cross.

‘The outcome could have pivoted with the penalty’s success. Our team exhibited stability and an unwavering focus on goal,’ Lillo supplemented. ‘The second half witnessed a marked escalation in our tempo. We reclaimed the ball with greater efficiency, exploiting the newfound spaces derived from our swift ball recovery… There were opportunities to score even before our initial breakthrough.’

United managed to level the score in the 85th minute, capitalizing on Kyle Walker’s misjudged backheel clearance. Jayden Bogle seized the opportunity, sending an angled shot through a crowded field to beat City’s goalkeeper, Ederson.

Just as United seemed to secure their first point upon their return to the top tier, Rodri dashed their hopes, securing the winning goal, masterminded by Walker against his former club.

Currently occupying the 17th spot in the standings, United has yet to garner a point from three matches. Nonetheless, their effort against last season’s triumphant treble winners earned them applause from the spectators.

In response to the commendations, Paul Heckingbottom’s dry smile accompanied his remark, ‘I’d opt for the point over back-pats any day. Topping City requires nothing short of perfection.’

He continued, ‘Despite City’s ball possession dominance, we managed to exert a certain degree of influence on its trajectory… It just adds a pinch more sting to the wound.'”
