According to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the much-anticipated iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus, slated as successors to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, are likely to boast a major camera upgrade. The upcoming models are expected to feature a high-resolution 48-megapixel rear camera, a significant improvement over the current 12-megapixel shooter. This enhanced camera, similar to the one found on last year’s iPhone 14 Pro lineup, will allow for better image quality, as it captures more light.

Kuo’s blog post reveals that Apple will source the higher-resolution camera sensor from Sony, utilizing their stacked CMOS image sensor (CIS) technology. While earlier predictions had hinted at potential production delays due to yield issues with the stacked sensor, Kuo states that Sony has significantly increased its CIS production capacity by 100-120 percent to meet Apple’s demand. This positive development for Apple has resulted in a dip in CIS supply for high-end Android smartphones, forcing certain manufacturers, particularly Chinese brands, to seek alternative suppliers like Will Semi and Smartsens for their CIS needs.
