The annual occurrence of the Perseid meteor shower has illuminated skies worldwide, bringing joy to those seeking to witness the enchanting streaks of shooting stars.

This phenomenon delivers a spectacle of up to 100 meteors per hour, as Earth collides with the remnants left behind by comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle.

Upon entry into Earth’s atmosphere, the debris undergoes combustion, resulting in the dazzling bursts recognized as shooting stars, visible to the unaided eye.

Nature’s captivating showcase takes place around the same timeframe in both July and August each year, with this year’s peak occurring between Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday.

Unfortunately, dense cloud cover over much of the UK left numerous stargazers disappointed. Nonetheless, certain sightings were feasible across Yorkshire, northeastern England, and portions of southern Scotland.

Looking ahead to upcoming opportunities for spotting shooting stars, BBC weather forecaster Billy Payne suggested that many individuals should manage to catch a glimpse, despite conditions that are less than ideal.

“Tonight, a spread of cloud and rain will envelop much of England and Wales, consequently limiting viewing prospects,” he remarked.

“Regions such as East Anglia, the southeast, and the far north of England might experience intermittent breaks in cloud cover before it thickens later on.

“Scotland and Northern Ireland can anticipate a few clear intervals overnight, although even here, patches of cloud will persist.

“Tomorrow night holds better prospects as clearing skies become more prevalent following the dissipation of cloud and rain for many.

“While rain may linger across northern England, the far northern and western areas are likely to witness intermittent cloud cover, particularly along coastlines and hills.”
