Lil Tay, the emerging rapper and influential presence on social media, has tragically passed away at the age of 14, as confirmed in an announcement shared on her verified Instagram account on Wednesday.

The teenage rapper, known by her birth name Claire Hope, first gained widespread recognition at the age of 9 due to her controversial videos that showcased a lavish lifestyle, quickly spreading across social media platforms.

“With heavy hearts, we convey the heart-wrenching news of the sudden and sorrowful departure of our dear Claire. Words cannot capture the immense loss and unfathomable pain we are experiencing,” the statement conveyed. “This outcome has caught us off-guard, leaving us profoundly shocked.”

The statement also revealed the unfortunate passing of Lil Tay’s brother, Jason Tian, and both of their demises are presently under investigation. Though the exact time and place of their passing remain unclear, Lil Tay hailed from Canada and relocated to Los Angeles in 2018 to pursue opportunities within the entertainment sector.

“The loss of her brother deepens the unimaginable depth of our grief,” the statement continued. “In this time of profound sorrow, we humbly request privacy as we navigate this overwhelming loss. The circumstances surrounding Claire and her brother’s departure are still being probed. Claire’s memory will forever endure in our hearts, leaving an unfillable void that will be sensed by all who were acquainted with her and cherished her.”

Lil Tay’s most recent Instagram post dates back to June 18, 2018, displaying an apparent screenshot of her video call with the late rapper XXXTentacion, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy. The post serves as a tribute to the rapper, who was tragically shot and killed in Broward County, Florida, on June 18, 2018, at the age of 20.

“X, your impact on me is profound,” reads the post. “You stood by my side when the world wished for my downfall; your guidance was unwavering. In a role akin to that of a father, especially when I lacked one, you were present—engaging in FaceTime conversations that lasted for hours during my moments of despair. A mere three hours before, you unveiled the charity event we were preparing to host. All the arrangements were in place. I struggle to fathom this reality, the malevolence that exists in our world. This isn’t a farewell; it’s an expression of my love for you, Bro.”

The explicit content within Lil Tay’s social media content, along with her impersonations of figures within the so-called gangster rap culture—wherein she simulated drug usage and employed racial slurs—sparked debates and concerns regarding the potential exploitation of minors within the realm of social media.

During a Nightline interview in 2018, Lil Tay, then just nine years old, delved into her rise to prominence on social media, embracing her self-proclaimed title as the “youngest flexer” on the internet.

In the interview with Nightline, her mother Angela Tian and her brother stood in defense of Lil Tay’s video content, outlining their perspective.

“Many will voice their opinions, but we remain resolute in our path,” remarked Jason, who, during the 2018 interview, was 16 years old, in a conversation with Nightline.

Speaking to Nightline, her mother expressed her pride, asserting herself as a capable parent. “I stand as a mother who takes pride in her achievements,” she emphasized, further predicting a bright future for her daughter in the limelight.

At that point in time, Lil Tay adamantly stated, “No external pressure compels me to pursue this course.” She clarified that she personally manages her Instagram account, reinforcing her autonomy over her actions.
